Abstract
This is a study of culture, particularly its meaning to Puerto Rican society. Part I is a discussion of concepts. Parts II and III describe Puerto Rican culture in the context of island history, and Puerto Rico's place within the Caribbean region. These two sections deal with the historical background of the island and certain specific features of Puerto Rican society that relate to national character, race relations, class structure, social change, and values. Two appendices conclude this work and provide additional ethnographic data on Puerto Rican culture and society. Appendix A, based on the work of Jane Collier, attempts to derive a profile of Puerto Rican values. Appendix B summarizes briefly the contents of some of the principal books and articles that have dealt with Puerto Rican culture.
