Abstract
Kossek has written a history and brief cultural overview of the Island Carib. She traces the history of wars and territorial claims by the Spanish, French, and English; and the Carib sresistance to foreign intrusions. Although early treaties recognized Carib rights to territory, they were later broken. The Carib Reserve Act of 1978 was the latest effort by Caribs to protect their communal rights to reserve land and preserve their culture. Kossek argues against Layng's recommendation to allow private/individual land title on the reserve (see document no. 14.) She also shows how usufruct rights that recognize only children of Carib fathers affects gender relations on the reserve.
