Abstract
Based on one year of field research in the PARAJES of Mahosik and Cahal c'en, outlying communities of the municipio of Tenejapa, this document investigates language acquisition by Tzeltal children. The dissertation consists of three chapters, in addition to the introduction and four appendices. Each chapter deals with one aspect of language acquisition. Chapter one deals with the socio-cultural context of language acquisition. This chapter provides data on pregnancy, childbirth, child rearing, adolescence, and marriage. Chapter two discusses how Tzeltal children acquire their botanical knowledge in their natural environment. Chapter three deals with some facets of Tzeltal plant taxonomy and nomenclature.
