Abstract
This document, based mainly on interview data, but also utilizing observational and archival data, describes and analyzes the changes in the weaving industry from about 1860 to 1967. Most of the data pertain to Díaz Ordaz, but comparative materials from Santa Ana del Valle and Teotitlßn del Valley are also presented. The author focuses on changes in weaving production, changes in merchandising, and changes in exchange relationships. She concludes that changes in social relations and productive activities have come about as a result of rational responses by Zapotec artisans to changes in supply and demand and changes in economic opportunity.
