Abstract
This document contains a study of land tenure patterns in the Valley of Oaxaca during the colonial period (ca. 1521-1810). Those portions of the book that pertain to Indians, both nobles and commoners, have been processed for the file while those chapters pertaining to Spanish landlords and missionaries have not been processed. The data for this study are drawn from land records, wills, judicial court records, and other colonial documents. The main topics covered in this study are land tenure and property rights, land disputes, and the land owning patterns of caciques and commoners. It is Taylor's conclusion that Oaxaca Indians retained much of their land holdings throughout the colonial period and were not engulfed by expanding Spanish haciendas as were the Indians in the northern parts of Mexico. Chapters contained in the document that have been processed for the Files are: Introduction; 1. The Setting; 2. Colonial Cacicazgos; 3. Pueblo and Peasant Lands; and, Conclusions.
