The Coyotepec molde and some associated problems of the potter's wheel

By: Foster, George McClelland.

Abstract
This document, based on three brief visits to Coyotepec in 1940, 1946 and 1958, contains descriptive materials on pottery making utilizing the molde, a rotating support on which the clay is worked. The descriptive data, based on observations of 4 potters, include information on the speed at which the vessel is turned on the molde, the shaping of vessels, and the differences in postures between male and female potters. Foster uses comparative materials on pottery making with the kabal (a rotating support found in the Mayan area) and the potter's wheel to draw the conclusion that '...the molde, as a type, is a strong contender as a 'missing link' in the evolution of the potter's wheel', an evolution that took place outside Mesoamerica.
