Abstract
This study of canal irrigation focuses on the sociopolitical organization involved in the construction, maintenance, and control of irrigation systems, the principles of water allocation, and the relationships between water control and political power. Lees collected data on irrigation systems and their administration in some 24 communities. She presents these data plus detailed case studies of 3 communities in order to illustrate the variability in water control in the Valley of Oaxaca. Archeological and historical materials are used to discuss the history of irrigation systems in the Valley. The final sections of the monograph are devoted to comparisons of irrigation systems in 'peasant' and 'tribal' societies and to a discussion of the issue of the relationship between water control and state level organization. Researchers interested in irrigation systems should also consult Kirkby (1973) which deals with the geophysical aspects of irrigation. Plates appear at the end of the document and have been numbered by HRAF as pages 143-149.
