Abstract
This document is a rich description of Zapotec lifeways, abundantly annotated with comparative material on non-Zapotec peoples. Category 171 was used for the latter material, including information the Aztecs, which is presented more as distributional evidence than as historical data. Category 184 was used for material on variability among Zapotec communities. The author's thorough familiarity with her subject, acquired in the course of three visits in 1929-1933, has permitted her to employ an expository style which requires the particularly close attention of the researcher. Much of the material is presented so as to form a verbal approximation of a visual image; new data on topics which appear to have been previously covered is thus sprinkled throughout this series of vignettes.
