Differential acculturation among the Huichol Indians

Themes of indigenous acculturation in Northwest Mexico, Thomas B. Hinton and Phil C. Weigand, editors ; contributors, N. Ross Crumrine ... [et al (38) • Published In 1981 • Pages: 9-21

Abstract
This document outlines some of the major historical trends that have affected and continue to affect Huichol acculturation. Also noted is how these trends were felt differentially by urban and rural dwellers. Huichol acculturation was mediated through the agency of three institutions: 1) municipal and state governments; 2) Catholic missions; and 3) the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. It is argued that the regional government played more of a stabilizing than innovational role in local society.
