Abstract
This monograph, in Spanish, is primarily a study of the gender roles and status of women in the Basque areas of Spain, with a focus on the Province of Guipuzcoa. Topics discussed in this work relate to a review of previous studies on Basque women, their role in the Basque nationalist movement, the description and characteristics of rural, fishing, and urban communities, general observations on the behavior and activities of women, the relationship of men and women in public spaces, power relations within the society (e.g., in decision making situations), cultural values related to women, and cultural changes as evidenced through the conflict of the traditional roles of women and new opportunities opened to them in the society. The appendices to this work contain lengthy discussions on methodology as well as a series of statistical tables summarizing the data presented in the text. The authors, many of whom are themselves Basques, are primarily social scientists and psychologist associated with the feminist movement, and are participants in the women's studies program of the Facultad de Zorroga de la Universidad del Pais Vasco.
