Abstract
This dissertation attempts to provide a critical evaluation of popularly held views of Basque politics and to show that the political focus operating in the area during that period were something other than violent, nationalistic, and anti-modern. In the course of developing his arguments the author examines three specific types of popular politics: rural protest movements, organized labor movements, and urban neighborhood associations. Each of these is discussed in much detail. Of primary importance in this discussion of popular politics is political party ideologies, particularly those relevant to the Basque Nationalist Party, the E.T.A., and the Basque Patriotic Left, which are given much attention in this work. Zirakzadeh traces the evolution of these ideologies into those militant phases which eventually led to guerrilla warfare against the Spanish government.
