Abstract
This monograph is composed of a number of tales told by Basque peasants at neighborhood gatherings, weddings or other feasts, or simply during the long winter nights when they were seated around their hearths. None of the stories or tales presented here is exclusively Basque in origin but contain elements from other surrounding cultures. The tales are arranged in order dealing with legends of the Tartaro or Cyclops, the Seven-Headed Serpent, animal tales, stories about the Basa-Jauna, the Basa-Andre (the wild man and the wild woman), and of the Laminak or Fairies, tales of witchcraft, a collection of miscellaneous stories with strong Keltic or French origins, entitled 'Contes des Fees', and finally religious tales and legends, probably taken from medieval sources. A concluding section by M. Julien Vinson provides some brief and rather dated information on the Basque language.
