Abstract
This is a study of funerals, mourning, and memorials in the Spanish Basque town of Murélaga. The author very elegantly shows the relationships and interaction among Catholic dogma and ritual, local funerary customs, and the social structure of Murélaga. This important source focuses on the beliefs, practices, and institutions surrounding death to arrive at an insightful understanding of the local social structure, with special emphasis on the central role played by individual households.
