Abstract
This source is the first volume of a study whose purpose is to present 'a series of short chapters embodying the results of a study of the manners, the customs, the daily life, the occupations, and the general social condition of the English people in the eighteenth century,'(p. v). Subjects covered in this volume are a description of London, some phases of town life, dress and costume, amusements and pastimes, coffeehouses, taverns, and clubs of London, gambling and dueling, popular beliefs and superstitions, quack doctors, and the wars of the eighteenth century. The majority of the data refer to the upper classes of London. This is a secondary source, written in 1891. The author relied to a large extent on diaries and personal correspondence for his data.
