Abstract
This document is primarily concerned with the ethnicity of the Icelanders and their identity as a modern nation. The author describes how modern (e.g., twentieth century) tourism has provided the icelanders with a national image of themselves which has created a continuity between a 'glorious past' and an ever changing present. This '…national identity is supported through major practices throughout the year, such as the Christmas season and the tourist season, creating images for Icelanders to nourish and for tourist to gaze at. The images create a sense of style and wholeness, which is a main characteristic of modernity'(pp. 233-234).
