By: Durrenberger, E. Paul, Gísli Pálsson.

Abstract
The author's examination of Icelandic notions of fishing success has led them '…to address a number of classical anthropological issues, among them: the relationship between models and reality, the relationship between ideologies and forms of production, the dynamics of forms of production, the economic and political structure of contemporary fishing, and the context of skippers' decision making' (p. 3). This article outlines the authors' analyses of the transformation of the fishing industry from medieval times to the modern period (ca. 1980s) and the corresponding models of production and fishing expertise.
