Book

Industry and commerce of the city of Rome (50 B.C.-200 A.D.)

Johns Hopkins Press (2) • Published In 1938 • Pages: 158

By: Loane, Helen Jefferson.

Abstract
The problem of provisioning Rome, primarily a residential urban center, is the focus of this book. Drawing on secondary sources (especially inscriptions from Roman tombs, buildings and other remains collected in the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum) Loane discusses trade, manufacturing activities, and commercial activities. The focus is on the city itself and there are extensive materials on the goods in circulation, their sources and the economic organization by which they were handled. Other aspects of Roman culture are incidental and knowledge about these on the part of the reader is frequently assumed. Bibliographic footnotes are found at the bottom of text pages.
