Abstract
This is an analysis of the concept of friendship as it is perceived and practiced by men in the world of the coffee house, in the community of Mouria, northern Lesbos, Greece. Papataxiarchis demarcates friendship from economic and political exchange, and its independence from kinship, and then discusses its developmental cycle and its focus on the making and sharing of masculine identity. The author notes that friendship rests on a rich infrastructure of gendered emotions, which are thought to be exclusively held by men. The conclusion of this study explores the implication of the author's analysis for the understanding of friendship, in particular, and same-sex relatedness, in general (p. 158).
