Abstract
This essay describes the icon, a type of religious picture associated with the Orthodox Christian faith, which are made according to traditional formulae that are believed to enable the icon to transmit divine grace to human devotees (p. 345). The author tries to relate the writings of theologians and art historians on the religious and artistic significance of these religious paintings to ethnographic data relevant to everyday domestic life in the Greek community on Nisos.
