The poetics of manhood: contest and identity in a Cretan mountain village

Abstract
This is Herzfeld's pièce de résistance and classic ethnography on Cretan highland culture. He makes the argument that androcentric ideology lies at the root of highland Crete's segmentary society and shows how in almost every instance male social encounters are expressions of mutual opposition, either amiable or hostile. He discusses how this androcentric ideology is expressed in such modes of action as hosting, elections, sheep stealing (and their narratives), feuds, reposts, and naming. For Herzfeld manhood is a performance acted out in front of a system of shared moral values and is an expression of agnatic solidarity and reciprocity, not rugged individualism.
