History in the making: national and international politics in a rural Cretan community

europe observedHoundmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire • Published In 1992 • Pages: 93-122, 188-196

By: Herzfeld, Michael.

Abstract
In this article, Herzfeld discusses Cretan villagers' understanding and representation of village, regional, and national history. Villagers have an acute understanding of power relationships as evident in their folktales and songs, which together with past history are a source of tropes for discussing the past, present, and future. Although villagers do not employ an objective historical perspective--they are imprecise about dates and periods, and, for example, equate the rule of Turks, Germans, and the military junta--their political discourse does speak to power and elicit common identities.
