Abstract
DuBoulay examines in detail the role and status of women in the rural Greek village of Ambeli. Women in rural Ambeli society are discussed from the standpoint of their symbolic, moral, and physical weakness, and in their role of spiritual guardian of husband, house, and family. Additional data in the article describe the role and status of the male, the relationship between husband and wife in the household, and the feminine role in marriage as reflecting certain moral concepts related to the Orthodox religion.
