Abstract
This book presents a detailed historical account of the Bosnian Muslim movement to achieve cultural and religious autonomy under the Habsburg regime in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period of 1878-1914. Donia believes that the Muslim protests against the government, which became such an integral part of the autonomy movement, were actually embedded in local power struggles within and between elites of various towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As the result, much of this work focuses on the organizational infrastructure of the Bosnian Muslim elites at the local and provincial levels. Further amplification of this theory is achieved through the author's lengthy discussions on the political aspirations, grievances, and demands of Muslim leaders and the polemical debates that accompanied the rising activism (p. xi).
