Abstract
An account of social change in a suburban working class community (Zelena jama) of the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the post-World War II period. The paper is based on the 1970 published ethnographic study entitled, 'The Ljubljana Settlement of Zelena jama as an Ethnologic Problem.' The study divides the settlement's growth into three periods: before World War I, between the two wars, and after World War II. Each period is marked by different degrees of i) home ownership, ii) occupational specialization, iii) employment opportunities and iv) community identity and solidarity. Although not a detailed account, the author does convey the ethos of a community situated between rural and urban environments.
