Abstract
This work describes some of the theoretical approaches to the long term study of single communities utilized by field researchers. Halpern discusses the community study approach, longitudinal studies in which the same population is followed over a period of time, the integrative approach combining various aspects of the above, and the team study approach using both social and biological science methodologies. Connected to these approaches are efforts to explore ways of integrating the data by applying concepts of linear and cyclical time. These concepts are described in detail in the text. Additional theoretical approaches discussed here deal with the relationship between orality and the written record, the application of time concepts to demographic data, and the use of computerized data bases. A secondary theme running throughout this document is that of cultural change with time relevant to the Serbs as a whole but with particular emphasis on the Serbian village of Orasac.
