Abstract
The discussion in this article centers around the development of trade in the produce of the plum orchards of Serbia -- primarily plums, dried prunes and RAKIJA SLJIVOVICA (a mild alcoholic beverage). During the nineteenth century Serbia was one of the major suppliers of the expanding world market for dried prunes. This development in world trade had profound effects on the small Serbian economy and it is the objective of this paper to examine the economic conditions which led to this situation and to assess the impact of the plum-based trades on the evolution of the country's economic institutions (p. 583).
