Abstract
The EPSKE PESME are epic narratives which deal with historical and mythological subjects and represent one example of the rich variety of forms of oral traditional expression found in certain areas of Yugoslavia. An example of the EPSKE PESME, as presented here, is the narrative-song 'UDOVICA JANA' (the widow Jana) as performed by the Serbian professional singer (GUSLAR) Aleksandar Jakovljevic in April 1954. The authors present a synopsis of the song, then the actual text itself, and a critical analysis thereof.
