Abstract
This paper is a study in historical demography dealing with the Serbian village of Orasac from the demographic, ethnographic, oral traditional, and socio-linguistic perspectives. The time span of this work is primarily from 1870-1975, although on occasion data may be included from an earlier time period (generally from the 1780s to 1870). The major focus of this study, fertility decline in the area '…is particularly important as Wagner's analyses provide an essential perspective on the long-term process of ecological transformation which proceeded [sic] the industrialization of this part of the Balkans in the postwar period' (p. i). In addition to the general theme of fertility which runs throughout this document, other topics discussed in some detail are birth rates, family size, birth control, and abortion. A series of twenty-nine tables at the end of this work summarize much of the author's data as presented in the text.
