The complementarity of women's ritual roles in a patriarchal society

Papers on a Serbian village : 1986, by Joel M. Halpern, Barbara Kerewsky-Halpern (14) • Published In 1986 • Pages: 42-62

By: Halpern, Barbara.

Abstract
According to Halpern there is a rich descriptive literature on ritual roles performed by women in various Balkan countries. In this work, by focusing on form and function in the carrying out of women's ritual roles in rural Serbia, Halpern believes that it is possible to go beyond mere description alone and suggests alternative explanations for gender differentiated ritual roles in Serbian society (p. 42). Additional information in the text relates to ritual roles for both men and women with specific references to role reversals under certain conditions. Halpern notes that although the limits of adaptability within Serbian social structure is characterized as relatively fixed, her field work with the Serbian villagers seems to indicate that sometimes it can be potentially receptive to various modes of change.
