Abstract
In this dissertation Spangler presents an in-depth study of time not only as a social idea but also in regard to its relationship to economic and social development in the city of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. A Serbian sample of the urban population was the primary focus of this investigation, which took place between June 1976 and August 1977. The author's hypothesis is '…that time as a complex ideas has had increasing implications for social and economic organization as time concepts have become more consistent, uniform, and socially institutionalized' (Introductory, p. v). After a review of previous temporal studies and an examination of the research setting of Belgrade, Spangler discusses Serbian life in the nineteenth century as an example of a period when a stable and important urban class did not yet exist. He then compares rural and urban life in Belgrade as it existed in the early twentieth century to that in the 1970s. In conclusion the study attempts to show '…that time as a complex idea is not uniform cross-culturally, even with comparable methods of time reckoning, because time is embedded not only in a social context but also a field of temporal awareness' (Introductory, p. vi.).
