By: Hammel, Eugene A..

Abstract
Hammel examines the institution of godparenthood (KUMSTVO), chiefly through the analysis of information on about 3700 godchildren, the data deriving from 69 genealogies collected in 15 villages scattered through Yugoslavia, with the majority of the cases coming from Serbia. Through this examination Hammel attempts to explain some aspects of social and cultural patterning, as well as with godparenthood as a subsystem of social organization through which social life is conducted. Neither synchronically nor diachronically does the study correspond with the ethnographic reality of Serbia or for that matter any region in Yugoslavia, since it has a broader focus in trying to elucidate the nature of social relationships in the Balkans.
