The meaning of carnival in Croatia

Abstract
This article, based on fieldwork in western Croatia from 1977-1980, deals with the relationship of Mardi Gras (carnival) to social stability and order as well as instability and change. The author also examines other associated features and functions of Mardi Gras: '… a ritual which shifts from the manipulation of nature to the manipulation of people and an innovative expression of village life ' (p. 90).
