Abstract
This dissertation deals with the maintenance of four traditional family values in Milograd (a pseudonym), a medium-sized industrial town in the Slavonian region of Croatia. The four values under study are: (1) household self-sufficiency, (2) authority of men and elders, (3) control of affect, and (4) the sentiment of a moral community (p. xx). The study is divided into two major parts, preceded by an introduction which discusses briefly the problem of selective cultural persistence. Part I of this study demonstrates the existence of the four values in daily and ritual life. This section contains information on the setting and daily round of activities which demonstrate that the four values noted above are manifest at a very general level in both the physical setting and in the pattern of daily life. Here also will be found data on ritual occasions (birth, death, military conscription), as well as courtship and marriage, and rituals of reversal. Part II is concerened with behavior within family households and community. It also deals with historical experience and the current economy, which contribute to the persistence of the four values (p. 36).
