Abstract
This is a study of socio-cultural change in the village of Sutivan on Brac Island located on the Dalmatian littoral in Croatia. During the period of the author's field work, June 1970 through April 1971, Bennett with his wife and family lived in the village observing the daily routine of life, and to some extent becoming a part of that life. The author records several major events which occurred during his stay which marked Sutivan's transition to, and participation in, the new economic development taking place in Dalmatia. These events relate primarily to the phenomena of tourism, weekenders, and the presence of the plastic factory in the community, all of which had immediate effects on the village. These effects are analyzed by the author '…in the setting of, first, altered kinship structure as the result of past emigration, second, altered hierarchical structure of decision-making as a result of the decline of viticulture, and finally, effects of the change in governmental structure ' (p. vi). This document also contains much information on geography, cultural history, community structure, various associations, medical care, education, wine making, the olive harvest, local entrepreneurs, and economic planning and development.
