Abstract
Only one half of this article has been translated for the Gilyak collection since the last part deals with the Ainu customs in relation to childbirth. This is an excellent article dealing with the limited subject of customs and beliefs connected with pregnancy and childbirth, the treatment of mother and child before and after birth, and the strange beliefs and taboos connected with twin births. Material here is based on the author's own observations of the Gilyak on Sakhalin Island.
