Abstract
This article is based on the scattered notes of Toivo Lehtisalo, a linguist, who spent several years (1911-1914, under the sponsorship of the Finno-Ugrian Society) among the Yurak Samoyed who live in the northern parts of the districts of Archangel and Tobolsk. The authors objective is to report the hunting methods and equipment used (at the time of the authors fieldwork and also in the past) by the Yurak Samoyed. The economic importance of hunting is stressed in the beginning of the article. Next, follows a detailed account of the seasonal pursuit of wildlife. The author tells which animals and birds are sought during each season; the methods used, whether caught in traps, poisoned, or shot; the equipment used, such as traps, guns, nets, or a special concealing device. Then follows a description of how crossbows were made, but, according to Lehtisalo, are no longer made and used by the Samoyed. The author concludes by giving an account of the different types of arrows made and which arrows are used to kill each kind of animal or bird.
