Abstract
Acting on the instructions of the Committee for the New Alphabets of the People of the North and the Scientific Investigation Association of the Institute of the People of the North, the author visited a group of the Forest Nenets on the northern tributaries of the Agan River. The material here is based to a large extent on this visit, although it has been supplemented by historical research, particularly in the beginning of the article where he has an analysis of the state of research on this particular group of people. The author continues his work with a survey of the areas of settlement of the Forest Nenets, and gives population statistics on the people. A comparison is made of a few details of material culture with the Tundra Nenets and other tribes of the area. Intertribal intercourse is discussed and then the author continues his study of this group by giving valuable material on the clan composition, marriage relationships, and linguistics, concluding that the two groups of Nenets were originally one tribe and that the Forest Nenets were separated from the original tribe and became considerably weakened. The two Nenets groups speak two dialects of the same language, the Forest Nenets speaking a dialect which shows an intimate connection with the language of the Ostyak. The author concludes his article with a brief description of the exploitation which contributed to the weakening of the Forest Nenets, and gives some general statements on the improvement of their condition under a socialistic organization.
