Abstract
The material in this source was edited by Samokvasov who used information from contemporary [i.e., ca. 1875] writers as well as that obtained about 1823 by a special commission supported by the governor of Siberia in collaboration with the natives. The editor includes information concerning the role of the clan chief (elder) in relation to the law, the rights of citizens, punishable acts, method of trial, execution of justice, inheritance laws, and divorce procedures. The researcher should note that the information contained pertains to the Vogul and Ostyak as well as the Samoyed. It is unclear as to how much of the data pertains to the Samoyed and, therefore, the data would be used with caution.
