Abstract
The author is a linguist who made two trips to the Samoyed territory—the first from 1911-13 when he visited the Selkup (Ostyak Samoyed) and the second in 1914 when he worked among the Khamassin who were an almost extinct Samoyed group living in the Sayan Mountains. His main purpose was to study the languages of the people involved and he has written many detailed technical articles. In this book, however, he describes his journey in popular style and includes much of the ethnographic data that was necessary for him to accumulate for his linguistic studies. His analysis is excellent and reliable since he made a conscious effort to live like the Samoyed and to understand them. In addition to information on the Samoyed, the author includes data on the Siberiaks, Tungus, Ostyak and Ket. The information on these groups has been included in the appropriate Files, but the entire text of the book has been included in the Samoyed File. This book was originally written in Swedish.
