Abstract
This is a study of the Kazaks of Western Mongolia, primarily the western provinces of Bayan-Olgiy and Xovd. The author reviews the history of migration back and forth across the Russia-Chinese-Mongolia borders. While he saw an emigration of Kazaks to the newly created Kazakstan Republic in 1991, there has been a more recent return migration of Kazaks back to Mongolia later in the decade. The author discusses the changes collectivization, and later privatization, have had on the nomadic way of life, as well as, the importance of kin- and non-kin based-social networks.
