By: Odgaard, Karen, Simonsen, Jens.

Abstract
In this article the authors examine the Kazak intellectual elite and their role in controlling and shaping Kazak identity in the Soviet era. They also discuss the fall in status of the intelligentsia when post-Soviet era market reforms brought in new avenues of accumulating wealth, status, and power. They focus on a post-Independence period of 'national euphoria' and a subsequent period of more diffuse reckoning of national identity.
