Abstract
This document focuses in the politics of nationalism in Armenia since 1988. The author argues that in the years leading to the disintegration of the USSR, Armenian political parties with different ideological foundations shared a deeply-felt national aspiration for a sovereign Armenia that would include the Armenian-populated Karabakh enclave in Azerbaijan. Beginning from the mid-1990s, however, there was a political shift, refocusing on domestic bread-and-butter economic issues. Such dynamics suggest that nationalism be viewed as a phenomenon that can coexist with competing ideologies and policy interests.
