Abstract
In this paper, Hollan analyses the consequences of religious change in a Toraja village of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. He describes how Toraja villagers traditionally define and respond to alternatives suggested by Christianity. Hollan argues that in studies of religious change there needs to be a measure of the perceived 'fit' between old and new religious conceptions. He also believes that the ways that individuals use cultural symbols and institutions to order and make sense of their everyday experience is another important factor in studies of religious change.
