Abstract
Downs presents a critical analysis of N. Adriani and A.C. Kruyt's classic monograph 'De Bare'e-Sprekende Toradjas van Midden-Celebes,' (that appears in English translation as documents 2-5 of this file) particularly in regard to the religion of these people. As a background for this study on religious practices the introduction provides an excellent culture summary of Toraja ethnography. The remainder of the book is divided into two parts, the first of which is concerned with religious beliefs with respect to cosmology, gods and spirits, the dead, the soul, witches and sorcerers, and death and disease, while the second part is specifically related to religious practices and practitioners, temples, and ceremonies. Throughout this work Downs shows the functional interrelationship of the various religious concepts and practices and their connection with Toraja social organization.
