Abstract
This source is an historical examination of the priyayi in Javanese culture. The author’s thesis is that the various functions of the priyayi and the factors, such as regionalism, which affect them must be examined in order to achieve a clear understanding of them. The source discusses the priyayi as a cultural type, their political functions, and the priyayi as a social class.
