Abstract
This source presents data on the town of Kudus and the history of the cigarette manufacturing industry there. The purpose of the study, however, is to understand the circumstances under which a particular sector of the indigenous population, the highly conservative Muslim merchant class called Santris, failed to become a politically powerful middle class.
