Abstract
Following a brief introduction to Mentawaian ethnography, with particular emphasis on daily foods consumed, Schefold directs his attention to the study of the Puliaijat ritual of this group, and specifically with those aspects and actions related to what the author calls the "culinary code" -- foods and food symbolism in the society. Although somewhat theoretical in nature, this essay does present interesting data on Mentawaian foods and food habits .
