Keling and Kumang in town: differential effects of urban migration on Iban men and women

female and male in borneo : contributions and challenges to gender studies1 • Published In 1991 • Pages: 489-528

By: Sutlive, Vinson H..

Abstract
Sutlive's purpose in this paper is threefold: '(1) to summarize the sex role models of men and women in rural areas, that is, roles as they have been stereotyped based upon gender differences; (2) to examine egalitarianism as it has been described for traditional Iban; and (3) to describe and analyze the lives of urbanizing Iban' (p. 489). Much of the material in this article deals with the major changes that have been brought about in Iban culture and society as the result of urban migration. Illustrative of these changes are a series of biographical sketches depicting the effects of urbanization on the lives of several Iban men and women. The final portion of this document is largely concerned with prostitution in which many young Iban women engage in order to make a living in the city.
