Abstract
This is a study of contemporary change (modernization) among the Iban. The study was conducted over three months among 684 Iban from three separate geographical areas. The Iban of these areas are the inhabitants of the longhouses in the riverine district of Lubok Antu, representing the traditional culture and referred to in the text as Area I; people in the longhouses along the Paku Road, in the southwest region, representing the settled agricultural Iban (Area II); and the urban dwellers in the fringe Iban villages (Siol Kandis and Tabuan), outside Kuching, representing the urban Iban (Area III). In addition to the analysis of the three different areas in terms of difference in geographical and cultural background, attitudes toward modernization, and the demands and needs of contemporary development in Sarawak, this document also describes aspects of Iban ethnography, including the present state of Iban society (p. 71).
