Abstract
As alternatives to migration, this monograph describes some of the technological, demographic and other adjustments made by groups of shifting Iban cultivators in response to changing environmental conditions (p. 3). These changes are neither sudden, nor do they indicate a 'breakdown' of the existing cultural system as the result of overpowering economic or political forces. The data presented here relate to several communities, notably in the Engkari (Nanga Jela), Ensebang, Baleh River, and Kemena (Bintulu) areas. The primary changes discussed in this work deal with the Iban system of resource use, particularly in regard to agriculture. This document also contains data on the history of migrations, land use and land tenure, human fertility and population growth, agricultural methods (primarily in reference to padi cultivation), and trade and sources of income.
